OS/400 is an operating system used on IBM's line of AS/400 (now known as iSeries) minicomputers. OS/400 & AS/400 were introduced within 1988. A latest version of OS/400 is currently known as i5/OS or even V5R3.
OS/400 & i5/OS develop built-inherent subsystems that provide a bit of feebleminded compatibility by owning earliest IBM general business systems, like a IBM System/3x series.
IBM designed i5/OS as a "turnkey" operating system, requiring little or even there are no in-places attention from either IT staff in the period of normal operation. E.g., i5/OS has the built-inherent (& quite mighty) DB2 database which does not involve separate installation & maintenance. Formulas administration has been wizard-driven for years, possibly prior to that term was defined. i5/OS is likewise swell regarded for its tuned Java implementation, including specific hardware optimizations.
Though non natively the graphic operation formulas, the Client Access Licensed Product includes [http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/navigator/ iSeries Navigator] a client depending & web depending versions for in writing rules & database administration & for the Apache web server & Websphere Application Server, there exists web depending administration.
i5/OS might coexist in modern iSeries and pSeries hardware alongside AIX and Linux.
